Chiang Mai is split into the three main areas of Tapae Gate, the Night Bazaar which is the heart of Chiang Mai city and the riverside banks alongside the Mae Ping River; each area offering a variety of accommodations, entertainment, nightlife and restaurants. The surrounding areas of Chiang Mai province that are most visited are Sukhothai and Chiang Rai. Sukhothai was Thailand’s first capital city and this historic area is a popular travel destination for visitors that would like to learn more about the culture and history of Thailand. Chiang Rai province’s main tourist pull is the natural unspoilt environment and the tours and treks provided in the area allowing tourists to visit Hilltribe villages; elephant treks and rafting are also popular activities in Chiang Rai and tours are offered at competitive rates. Chiang Rai is also a short stay town for many foreigners that need to travel up to Burma for a visa run. |
