Animal attractions in Phuket include two conservations centres, the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Conservation and Extension Center and the Gibbon Rehabilitation Center. The former is a large area of protected virgin forest that is home to monkeys, birds and many species of deer that would have otherwise been threaten from a loss of environment, whilst the Gibbon rehabilitation center specialises in taking domesticated gibbons and teaches them how to survive in the wild before they are released back into their natural environment.
Phuket Zoo is another popular sightseeing attraction displaying mainly animals, birds and reptiles native to Thailand including tigers and a large population of crocodiles. Phuket Aquarium is located at Cape Panwa is one of two aquarium attractions on Phuket and displays a large variety of local marine life; the other is the Phuket Butterfly Farm and Aquarium which also has a butterfly garden and has daily monkey, crocodile and elephants shows.
Museum attractions in Phuket include the Phuket Sea Shell museum is massive show of sea shells from around the world though emphasis is placed on shells that have been collected from local waters. For those that wish to delve into Phuket’s history visit the Thalang National Museum which features artefacts and historical items from Phuket’s past.
Phuket has a number of historical sightseeing attractions including a fine selection of temples. The two largest and most visited temples in Phuket are Wat Phra Tong and Wat Chalong. Wat Phra Tong is also known as the Golden Buddha Temple, a reference to the half buried Buddha image which can be found at the temple; local legend follows that anybody that attempts to dig at the tiles and uncover the rest of the Buddha image will befall a terrible fate. Though you can visit these Phuket temples by yourself many tour operators in the area will organise sightseeing tours to these attractions.
Heroines Monument is another popular historical attraction in Phuket; located in Phuket City, the monument was placed there in honour of Khunying Jan and her sister Mook who were key players in defending Phuket from the Burmese in the 18 th century.
A walk around Phuket Town is one of the nicest ways to see one of Phuket’s main attractions, the Sino-Portuguese architecture that is a signature of the islands interesting history. Heritage tours can be arranged so visitors can find the best examples of this architecture and learn more about it, though if you sightseeing without a tour guide then make sure you pay a visit to the Provincial Town Hall, Nakhon Luang Thai Bank and the Phuket Courthouse.
