Chiang Khan

chiang_khan_mountain_sunriseThis delightful tiny town by the Mekong must surely be one of the hidden gems of Thailand.  Upon my visit there just before New Years Eve 2009, there were many tourists there but these were Bangkokians, not foreigners.  They clearly know a good thing.  Chiang Khan town is between Loei and Nong Khai in the North East of the country, situated on the banks of the Mekong River with Laos peering its welcoming head over.  As soon as you arrive, you will find the main street in town which has cute guesthouses, some with river views, restaurants and very hip, funky bars and cafes.  Thais love their arty, sweetly designed gifts and many shops were selling these to the holidaying crowd.

chiang_khan_sunsetHire a bicycle from one of the friendly guesthouses and cycle along the river for 4 km and you will find Kaeng Khut Khu which is a popular bend in the Mekong for Thai tourists that has some rapids and a scenic resort and restaurant.

Wake up early to feed the monks as they amble eerily through the street and then drive 7km to the top of a mountain where you can catch an incredible vista at sunrise.  Peer below as the clouds swirl all around the mountains and the sun slowly rises.

CHIANG KHAN GUESTHOUSES
