Shopping in Koh Samui isn’t just about the shops, it’s the street stalls and hawkers that give the Koh Samui’s shopping areas their excitement. Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach being the centre of Koh Samui’s shopping action.
At night the roads come alive with fluorescent lights over hanging the latest counterfeit merchandise, Rolex watches, Gucci handbags, Nike trainers and even fake Swiss army knives. Be aware that the counterfeit goods are not the bargain they seem to be; many of these goods are low quality and are offered to customers at an inflated price.
The inevitable Indian tailors are on Koh Samui, suits and shirt sets being offered at low prices though it is advised to shop around and use a reputable tailor. At these shops and on the street you will find Thai silk as well as Thai handicrafts that have been brought down from Northern Thailand, a major handicraft manufacturing area of Thailand.
Hilltribe handicrafts are offered for sale by pairs of women walking up and down the streets dressed in the Hilltribe style though you can never seem to be sure whether they are from hill tribes or not!
As well as bikinis and beachwear you can buy wetsuits from one of the many scuba diving equipment shops, in fact many water sports shops are open on this island selling the latest must have diver’s masks and sea fishing equipment. Branches of many well known western shops can be found mainly on Chaweng and Lamai, Boots chemist, Tescos and Pizza Hut amongst them. |
