Many bars in Koh Samui are foreign owned by people that have fallen in love with Thailand and the Thai girls, left the west to set up the dream life of running a bar on a tropical island. With the huge amount of tourists visiting Koh Samui ever year as well as the western people that have set up businesses there a lot of money has been invested in Koh Samui over the last 20 yrs and its night life shows that it was money well spent.
The two main areas of night life on Koh Samui are Chaweng and Lamai, and the rest of the island is pretty quiet after dusk with everybody heading to these places.
Chaweng Beach
Chaweng is the highlight of Koh Samui's night life, with the best, biggest and most happening bars and clubs. Everything is played here from chilled out reggae at the famous reggae bar to thumping techno at the Green Mango, one of Samui's liveliest hot spots. Live music from foreign and local bands knock out the old classics as well as the new hits at atmospheric venues, and DJs are flown in from around the world to provide the latest dance tunes in the modern discos.
Chaweng is also home to the most girly bars on the island so if your in need of some company, or just want to be called a "handsome man" every time you pass a bar then Chaweng is the place to be. Beers at these bars are in the 100 baht price range, and to take some a bar girl out of the bar for a night then you need to pay the bar a bar fine. Make sure you practice your connect four game before you get there it's the bar girls game of choice. More >>>>
Lamai Beach
Smaller than Chaweng, and though it can be quiet in the low season, Lamai can often rival Chaweng for a good night out and should not be overlooked especially if you prefer your nights out to be a little quieter. Lamai also has a good variety of nightlife, you can watch Thai lady boxing, mud wrestling, dance the night away at a disco or listen to some great bands. Of course the Thai bar girls are still there and you can still just take it easy at a beer bar trying to find a girlfriend for your holiday.
It's often claimed that Lamai is a more beautiful beach than Chaweng so if you prefer a more tranquil night out, a quiet beer and some food with nice company then Lamai is the place for you with its many laid back beach bars and restaurants. If you do get carried away into the party atmosphere and don't fancy a trip up to Chaweng then one of the best places in town to go wild is the Bauhaus Pub, Bistro and Disco with it's cheap cocktails, and famous Friday night foam party. |
