Phu Wiang

Phu Wiang district is positioned to the northwest of Khon Kaen province and is visited primarily for its' dinosaur museum and national park.

Dinosaurs?!  Yes!  In 1976 some miners unexpectedly found a dinosaur's patella bone, excavation in the area followed and the local tourism agencies were no doubt delighted to be able to promote something unusual for visitors!

Tourists now flock to the Phu Wiang Museum which has free admission for all and is situated very close to the National Park entrance.  You will find lifesize models of the dinosaurs found in the region and it's a great way to spend 2 hours with the family.

Phu Wiang National Park covers 380 square kilometres and offers pleasant treks where you can find dinosaur fossils in small display areas during your walk.  Visit Red Palm Cave (Tham Famue Daeng Dang) and be impressed with the pre-historic drawings on the walls.  Some waterfalls are scattered throughout the park, Namtok Tat Fa being the most impressive.  For those wishing to stay overnight in the park, tent and bungalow options are on offer.
