Loy Krathong History
Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. 'Loy' literally means 'to float,' while 'kratong' refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on water. An original krathong can made of a layer of the trunk of a banana tree decorated with banana leaves and/or spider lily plant leaves. A kratong contains food, betel nuts, flowers, joss sticks, candle and coins. The making of a kratong is much more creative these days as many more materials are available.
