Shopping in Chiang Mai is a treat for any Thailand visitor, especially if you are shopping for the more traditional Thai handicrafts and Hilltribe goods. Chiang Mai offers a large range of handicrafts shops, as well as markets full of silks, antiques, ceramics, Buddhist art, and home decor and the prices here are the cheapest in Thailand, providing of course that you have got your bargaining skills perfected.
A major advantage of shopping in Chiang Mai is that the visitor may watch artisans working within the city and in several outlying villages, particularly along the Bo Sang-San Kamphaeng Road where, in genuine cottage industries, parasols, silk and cotton weaving, jewellery, woodcarving, silverware, celadon, and lacquer ware are manufactured, and number among popular purchases.
The famous Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai is one of the best and busiest places to shop. It offers everything you would expect for tourists in Thailand, handicrafts, wooden ornaments, silk gowns, counterfeit clothing, bags and watches, tailored suits, copied CDS and DVDs as well as a whole host of other things designed to catch your eye as presents to take back home. Being a tourist shopping area quality in Chiang Mai’s Night bazaar can vary a lot so make sure what you are buying is what it is stated to be, and don't be afraid about bargaining the price down; you will always be given a high price as a tourist in the night bazaar and bargaining is expected. more >>>
Baan Tawai
Baan Tawai is a crafts village in the district of Hand Dong, about 20 kms south of Chiang Mai and is a must visit for those serious about quality Thai handicraft shopping. Baan Tawai consists of a series of showrooms that sell goods both for wholesale and retail, including Thai silk, silverware, ceramics, wood carvings, antiques and furniture amongst others. Baan Tawai specializes in producing imitation antiques and there is a wide selection on display as well as an excellent selection of woodcarving products. Every year either at the end of January or the start of February there is the Baan Tawai Handicrafts and Woodcarving Fair. |
