Chiang Mai, 'The Rose of the North' is one of the finest areas of Thailand to experience traditional Thai food. Northern Thai food is heavily influenced by Burmese cuisine with milder curries than the North Eastern regions and sticky rice, which was traditionally eaten by hand after kneading it into a ball. Though Chiang Mai is host to many authentic Thai restaurants there are many international restaurants as well, reflecting the popularity of Chiang Mai as a European tourist destination, as well as a number of Chinese restaurants. Often located along the picturesque Mae Ping River and even in the mountains dining at one of Chiang Mai's restaurant is a relaxing way to really sample a taste of Thai culture as well as the food.
The Tha Nam Restaurant and Guest House
The Tha Nam restaurant is located on Changklan Rd. along the banks of Chiang Mai's Mae Ping River, and not just a restaurant but a guesthouse and art gallery attractively set in century old teak houses. An interesting fact is that most of the artwork available in the gallery and used as decor was created by Mr Pichien, one of the establishments proprietors. Befitting of Chiang Mai it is a traditional restaurant serving Lanna style Thai food from North Thailand as well as the popular Central Thai food. With it's relaxing setting, overlooking the river and with traditional Thai folk musicians playing in the background, it's no surprise that in the last 15 years it has become one of the most popular venues in Chiang Mai for expats, locals, families and those intimate romantic dinners for two.
