Sukhumvit is the centre of Bangkok for some tourists and for others the whole of it. Just as popular with Thailand's expatriate community, this modern area of Bangkok has everything needed for a comfortable stay in the city, with numerous hotels, shops, bars and restaurants catering for the foreign trade.
The BTS sky train covers the length of the area and also connects with the MRT subway at Asoke (Sukhumvit Soi 21) making travel within the Sukhumvit and into the farther reaches of Bangkok quick, cheap and convenient.
For those less inclined to use public transport don't despair, thousands of tuk tuks and taxis travel Sukhumvit Road day and night, and anyone would be well advised to take on of these from the main road and not those parked up outside the main bar areas that will give you a more expensive un-metered price for you trip.
Shopping in Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit is home to one of Bangkok's most prestigious malls The Emporium, which hosts a number of European designer brand names shops such as Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Chanel, the less expensive central chain as well as Chaps, Lacoste, CD warehouse and a branch of the excellent Japanese bookstore chain Kinokuniya. It also has an excellent gourmet food shop on the top floor along with a great food court and modern cinema.
Easily accessible by BTS sky train are Ploenchit/Chitlom and Siam with are shopper's paradises with the MBK mall, Siam centre, World Central and high class Gaysorn Plaza. Out of the shops and onto the streets and you will find your usual array of cheap handicrafts and silks, counterfeit clothes, watches and bags as well as selection of the latest bootlegged CDs and DVDs. Haggle well in this area as Sukhumvit street vendors will often ask prices well above the good's worth.
