In and Around Bangkok
Areas inside Bangkok
In Bangkok all the areas have a range of accommodation that meets all budgets and a good selection of restaurants, nightlife and entertainment. The most popular area in Bangkok for tourists is Sukhumvit with its many bars and restaurants aimed at the foreign traveller. The business and financial sector of Silom is also a much visited area especially by people stopping in Bangkok for business. Ploenchit and Siam are well tailored for those whose intention is to shop until they drop, whilst Banglamphu offers close proximity to many of Bangkok 's main attractions.
Most of Bangkok 's areas apart from Banglamphu and some of the riverside area are easily accessible and linked by the BTS sky train and MRTA metro railways, and from all parts of Bangkok you can find a way onto Bangkok 's expressway which offers quicker access to the airport than normal road travel.
Areas and provinces outside Bangkok
Around Bangkok there are many provinces of interest, the most visited being Thailand 's old capital of Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi, home of the River Kwai. Many tours can be organised by Bangkok travel agents to these provinces. You can visit for a few days away or a single day as there close proximity to Bangkok means they you can travel to and from them in a matter of hours by road or rail. For destinations that have a lot of attractions such as Kanchanaburi it is definitely worth staying a few days if possible to get a real feel for the province and to save you having to watch the clock throughout your day making sure you are in time for the bus or train home.
Of course you do not have to travel with a tour company to visit these areas and they can be accessed cheaply either by train and/or bus from either Hualampong Train station or one of Bangkok's Bus terminals; For something a little different, Ayutthaya can be travelled to by boat from Bangkok along the Chao Phraya river. These destinations are worth a visit for those people short of time in the Kingdom and wanting to see more areas of the country, or for those waiting in Bangkok for a few days before travelling off to another of Thailand 's destinations. These local provinces also offer the ideal get away opportunity for the Bangkok expat that may only have the odd weekend free from a busy work schedule.
