Bangkok National Bus Services

Ask most people in Bangkok and they will tell you that Bangkok has only three bus terminals but in actual fact it has five, though three of them are all at the same location of Mochit (Mor Chit) and just have different phone numbers for bus travel information hence the confusion. If the journey is long distance then the buses will leave either during the morning or late at night for the overnight journeys, not during the daytime, this is so passengers arrive at their destination at a convenient hour.

All tickets can be bought on the day and the busier bus routes will often have buses departing every half an hour. An exception to this is during longer Thai national holidays or when a single day Thai holiday will be just before or after the weekend which allows people three days off work; during this time many of Bangkok residents will travel back to their hometowns to visit family. For major Thai holidays such as Songkran (Thai New Year) you will find it impossible to travel by bus especially to the main celebration area of Chiang Mai unless you book well in advance.

Bangkok Bus Terminals / Stations

The Transport Company Limited takes care of the operations of all of the Bangkok bus terminals. They have a website: www.transport.co.th but it is only available in Thai language. If you can read Thai or know someone that does then you can find the timetables for all the Transport Company Ltd buses for all regions on their website.

The Transport Company Ltd also has a call center telephone number which covers all Bangkok bus terminal destinations. Bangkok TCL Call Center: 1490

Northern / North Eastern and Central Bus Terminal - Mochit

Mochit Bus Terminal, Phaholyothin Road, Kamphaeng Phet 2, Bangkok.

Tel: 02 793 8111

The busiest and largest of bus terminals by far is the Mochit (Mor Chit) bus station, often just called the Northern Bus Terminal even though is has two other terminals located there. This is the terminal for reaching all major Thailand destinations with buses travelling to all points in Central, North and North Eastern (Isaan) Thailand .

The main destinations people use this terminal for travelling to are the Isaan areas of Thailand for many of the Thai people visiting family when not working in Bangkok ; and for foreign visitors, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Aranyaprathet which is where you can cross overland into Cambodia and is often use for visa runs. Tickets for North Eastern

bus travel can be purchased on the second floor. You can reach this bus terminal by BTS sky train (Mochit station) and the MRTA metro (Chatuchak or Kamphaeng Phet stations) but the stations are not directly outside and you'll need to take a taxi to travel the last part of the journey.

Eastern Bus Terminal - Ekkamai

Next to Sukhumvit Soi 42, Ekkamai BTS Station

Tel: 02 391 2504 / 02 391 8097

Ekkamai Bus Terminal  is for bus travel to the Eastern region of Thailand for coastal provinces such as Chonburi, Pattaya and Trat. From Trat you can take a local bus further onto the Cambodian border for an overland crossing or visa run. Along these destinations you can take boat connections to the nearby popular Thai islands of Koh Samet and Koh Chang. Located in the Sukhumvit area, this is the easiest bus terminal to reach as it has the BTS sky train line running right up alongside it is just a few minutes walking distance from the Ekamai BTS station. Traffic in this area can be extremely bad during rush hour and if you decide to take a taxi to get there make sure you allow for some extra journey time to reach the bus terminal.

Southern Bus Terminal - Sai Dtai Mai

Boromratchachonnani Road, Taling Chan, Bangkok

Tel: 02 894 6122 / 02 422 4444

Located in Thonburi, the old part of Bangkok on the other side of the Chao Phraya River from the main areas of the city is the Southern Bus Terminal. It's quite far out of the way and though it can be reached by local bus the BTS sky train and Metro system do not travel here, so it is best reached by taxi. Buses travel to every major destination in Southern Thailand from here such as Hua Hin, Petchaburi, Chumphon (for boat connections to Koh Tao), Surat Thani (For boat connections to Koh Samui, Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao), Krabi, Phuket and Hat Yai. You can travel all the way to the Southern Thai border from here to allow overland crossing into Malaysia . This is also the terminal needed if you want to travel to the direct western area of Thailand such as Kanchanburi and Nakhon Pathom, though North Western destinations are reached by the Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit).
